Will Sanju Samson be dropped from the playing XI for the fourth T20I? What did the bowling coach hint at?
Morne Morkel on Sanju Samson: Indian opener Sanju Samson has been struggling in the T20 series against New Zealand. India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel expressed confidence in his return to form, saying that just one good innings would change everything.

New Delhi. Questions have been raised about opener Sanju Samson’s participation in the T20 World Cup after he failed to score runs in the first three matches of the ongoing T20 series against New Zealand. Bowling coach Morne Morkel expressed confidence that the struggling batsman would soon return to form. He said on Tuesday, January 27, that Sanju just needs one good innings to make a comeback. Samson has scored just 16 runs in the first three T20 matches, with his highest score being 10, while other top-order batsmen like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav have dominated the New Zealand bowlers.
“Sanju is one innings away from regaining that confidence and form. For us, it’s important for us to be in top form at the right time in preparation for the World Cup. He’s training well and hitting the ball well,” Morkel told reporters before the fourth T20I.

Although it was an optional practice session, Samson spent over 30 minutes in the nets, facing bowlers like Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek, and side-armer Raghu. After some initial struggles, Samson found his rhythm and began sending the ball flying around the ACA-VDCA Stadium. The Kerala batsman then had a long conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on the sidelines while Shreyas Iyer was practicing.
What did you say about Sanju…
Morkel insisted he wasn’t too concerned about Samson’s form, saying the team’s victory was more important than individual performances. “I think it’s just a matter of time before he starts putting up big scores. For us, the focus is on the team winning, and that’s what’s most important. We’re currently 3-0 up in the series, and the boys are playing some very good cricket. We have a few matches left before the World Cup starts, and I’m confident Sanju will find his form,” the South African coach said.
